It is required that you complete a second residency in the specialist subject of Endocrinology, once you have completed a residency in Internal Diseases. Specialist residencies are available at some Training and Research Hospitals under the Ministry of Health, as well as universities.
The Endocrinology and Metabolism Department diagnose and treat the following disorders and diseases; hormone disorders in adults (over the age of 16), Thyroid Disorders (all types of goiter), Insulin resistant syndrome, Diabetes Mellitus (diabetes), hypoglycemic disorders, Adrenal Gland Disorders (Cushing Syndrome, Addison Disease, hirsutism based on testosterone produced by the adrenal gland, pheochromocytoma…etc.), Polycystic ovary syndrome, Pituitary Gland Disorders (micro and macro adenoma of the pituitary: prolactin secreting adenoma, growth hormone secreting adenoma (Acromegaly), Cushing Syndrome, thyrotrophic adenomas (rare), and hormone secreting pituitary adenoma), obesity, calcium homeostasis disorders (parathyroid gland disorders, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, osteitis deformans, and rickets), growth and development disorders (physical and sexual development disorders), sexual reproductive system disorders, hormonal and metabolism disorders that occur during pregnancy. Our department mainly provides polyclinic services for the areas listed above. Additionally, our department provides Endocrinology consultations for inpatients of other departments and those that check in at our Accident and Emergency department, it monitors inpatients throughout their hospitalization period, and provides treatment for patients after admitting them.
Our Diabetic Specialist Nurse plans the individual training programs of our diabetes patients, which provides current information and explains what diabetes is, the treatment methods, the complications involved, the body check-ups required, and additional subjects such as regular chiropodist visits, etc. The Diabetic Specialist Nurse also provides support to patients regarding practical application such as how to do your insulin injections, and how to use a blood sugar measuring device. Additionally, the Diabetic Specialist Nurse contacts follow-up diabetes patients when necessary.
In our country, the graduate program for becoming a Diabetic Specialist Nurse is among the specialist branches of nursing. Diabetic Specialist Nurses need to complete a 4-year undergraduate degree and then gain at least 2 years of work experience. Once individuals complete the one-month long theoretic and practical certificate training program, organized by the Association of Diabetic Specialist Nurses, they are ready to become a Diabetic Specialist Nurse.
